Before You Adopt:

Set Yourself and Your New Dog Up for Success

Adopting a rescue dog is life-changing — for them and for you. Before you bring home your next family member, take a few minutes to understand what to expect and how to prepare. The more you know now, the smoother your journey will be.

Adoption isn’t just about bringing home a dog — it’s about giving them a safe, predictable environment where they can decompress and thrive.
At Infinite PawsAbilities, we’ve seen firsthand that educated adopters create the most stable, successful placements.

A little preparation now prevents stress, setbacks, and misunderstandings later.

Please take a few minutes to go through our Pre-Adoption Guide and complete the Rescue Success mini-course below.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Every dog needs time to decompress.

When a dog enters a new home, they may shut down, cling, hide, pace, avoid people, or seem “too perfect.” This is normal. Your only job during decompression is to give structure, calm, and routine so your dog can feel safe enough to be themselves.

THE 3-3-3 RULE

Most rescue dogs take 3 days to decompress, 3 weeks to learn your routine, and 3 months to feel truly at home. Knowing this ahead of time changes everything — it turns confusion into patience, and patience into a lifelong bond.
